Combining archival footage with testimony from activists and scholars, director Ava DuVernay's examination of the U.S. prison system looks at how the country's history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America.
The article by Ta-Nehisi Coates discusses the impact of mass incarceration on African American families in relation to the 1965 report "The Negro Family: The Case for National Action," by lead author Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Topics include Moynihan's views on working mothers and patriarchy, the impact of the imprisonment of young African American men on the economic status of black families, and the cultural effects of imprisonment on prisoners. Challenges facing the families of prisoners are addressed.
