Formatting your document

Document Format: Before you start, check your word processing program's defaults

  • Margins: one inch all around (check page layout in MSWord..some versions have different settings)
  • Spacing should be set to double space (check paragraph spacing in MSWord - change to 0 for after)
  • Font: Times New Roman 12pt or equivalent (MSWord defaults to Calibri 11pt)
  • Your teacher may or may not require:
    1. Title Page
    2. Running head
    3. Abstract

APA style document formatting

For those who prefer not to use the APA templates included on this guide.

There is no one style for Title Pages, as the requirements are determined by the recipient to whom you are submitting your paper.  It is important to read the notes included on the sample Title Page. Also included are tips on using Word features to create separate pages (page break feature) and an example of the References page with the hanging indent feature.
